The City of Alpharetta has specific guidelines for building a fence on your property. 

For example, the height of fences can’t exceed six feet on residential property and eight feet on non-residential property. Additionally, the finished side of all fencing should face away from the property.

Fences and perimeter walls should be wood, metal, brick, block, vinyl or stone. Fences over six feet tall and retaining walls over four feet tall require a permit and inspections.

Alpharetta does not allow privacy fences in any front yard. To prevent visibility obstruction, no fences over three feet can be located within twenty feet of an intersection. They also cannot be constructed within ten feet of the edge of a driveway leading to a street.

Further, fences must be five feet from required landscape buffers to accommodate construction and maintenance unless approved at a public hearing.
