Johns Creek is one of five cities in Metro Atlanta that require a permit to install a fence. The City of Atlanta, the City of Johns Creek, the City of Brookhaven, the City of Sandy Springs, and the City of Johns Creek all have individual processes and rules regarding fence construction.

In Johns Creek, fences must not exceed 8 feet in height from grade. The City of Johns Creek also enforces the Metropolitan River Protection Act. This act recognizes the Chattahoochee River Corridor extends 2,000 feet from the banks of the river. Due to its protected status, any construction, including fencing, within the corridor requires site plans showing vulnerability categories. This includes existing, proposed, and allowable clearing.
